An aeration service is the process of removing plugs from your lawn to help with compaction.  A dethatching service is the process of removing some of the dead organic material that builds up over time.  Both services will also help your lawn get the water and nutrients it needs.  Overseeding at the same time will also help fill in some of the thin areas.
